This workflow can be used to carry a structural steel model designed in Revit Structure into RAM Structural System (RAM SS) in order to perform a structural analysis of the design. After the analysis has been performed in RAM SS, the updated model can be transferred back to Revit using the workflow outlined on the RAM to Revit WorkflowPage.
In order to perform the Revit Structure to RAM Structural System transfer you must first install the Bentley: Revit Structure Link.
Categories that will be exported from Revit Structure to RAM SS:
Structural beams, columns, braces
Member Sizes
Member fixity
Analyze flag (Lateral vs. Gravity)
Steel material properties of members
Decks
Orthogonal and radial grid lines
Gravity point and line loads
Load combinations composed of gravity loads only
Limitations and Suggestions for a Successful Export:
Continuous beams in the Revit model are not broken up on the export and will create errors in the RAM model. They should be broken up in Revit, before exporting to RAM.
Although the decks are exported from Revit Structure, the slab edges must still be defined within RAM structural System. For most models, this is a matter of selecting "Layout" from the menu bar, then "Slab Edge" then "Whole Perimeter" inside the RAM Modeler.
All decks are exported as a VERCO W2 Formlok deck. To change the deck type to match your Revit Structure model, change the deck assignment in RAM Modeler.
All grid lines are imported as if they are on the same level, which may cause overlap in some cases.
Surface loads are not exported. You should select the load types and combinations you want to apply within RAM Modeler.
Load combinations must conform to RAM Structural System criteria (no more than five load cases, no combinations comprised of other combinations) to be imported. All load combinations with gravity load cases only are imported into the RAM Frame Steel Post Processor Mode.
Braces in RAM are associated with the top story they frame into. When designing braces in your Revit model, be sure to set the “Reference Level” in the Element Properties box for the brace to the story at the top end of the brace.
Step-by-Step Workflow
1. Create structural model in Revit Structure 2008. 2.Select “Tools” from the menu bar, then “External Tools” and “Export Model to RAM.” 3.Click “OK” to the message. 4.Select export destination. 5.Unselect “Freeze Member Sizes.” 6.Select “All” under “Log File Messages.” 7.Click “Export.” 8.Your export is complete and you can now begin your structural analysis with RAM Modeler.
